GTS | Get The Shot! I always like seeing the behind the scenes of anything. The making of movies, set of a photo shoot or story behind a picture. Since this is a photographers blog we are going to add a new photo behind the scenes feature called GTS. There is a ton of shit and some type of story that happens behind each and every photo anyone takes. Hopefully here will will try and deliver that behind the scenes story for you.

Vans Cup Slopestyle 2008 - Northstar at Tahoe
Saw a photo on Transworld Snowboardings website that Andy Wright took. I happened to be in the photo shooting a photo as well. I went back and looked for the photo I took and voila, you get see both views. It is interesting to see how two different people attack the same trick. Andy is shooting into the sun, standing on the outside edge of the jump. That is actually where I wanted to stand but that caused you to look straight into the sun, which is clearly visible behind a cloud in Andy’s photo. I opted to shoot with the sun behind me but to do that I had to stand outside the jump and walk in when the riders were coming down. You can see in both photos that the rider, Tyler Flanagan, is looking towards the camera. Obviously Andy and I both were looking for the moment that Tyler’s face was towards the camera and Tyler was grabbing. In Andy’s photo Tyler is pretty much at his best point, style wise. In my photo it is a little too early, by the time he reached his best point he was facing the other way so for me, it was not a keeper, for Andy it was. Andy is great photographer either way.

Vans Cup Superpipe 2008 - Northstar at Tahoe
Contests are always crowed and every one there is trying to get the same banger shot as you. I normally don’t really like to be in the crowd of photographers but I really wanted to get this fisheye shot of Danny Kass on his first hit signature air to fakie. Here are two different views of the mayhem on the deck of the 2008 Vans Cup Superpipe when Danny was dropping for his final run.

- George Croslands view of me trying to get the shot in the mix of the media frenzy. It pretty funny to look at.

- Here was my view. You wouldn’t think that there is a million other people around me and I’m laying in the middle of them. You can barely make out Crosland on the bottom right.

Lighting: Natural

Rider: TravisRice

Location: Icer Air 2007, San Francisco

Trick: rodeo seven

What can you say it is Travis Rice. Travis is pretty much like the Terje of the new Millenium. He can pretty much do whatever he wants, including double rodeo 10’s over the Bay Bridge in San Francisco at the Esurance Icer Air. Do the trick and get the chicks, Travis had a lot of female fans.

Rider:Tim Eddy

Location: Bear Mtn, CA- HD&HR 07

Trick: frontside stall

I always love when snowboarders do straight up skateboard tricks. I was real excited to see Tim Eddy do a proper frontside rock on the quarter. Not many dudes were hitting this thing properly; Tim Eddy, Kyle Loppicolo, Joe Sexton..a few others, I forget, that was two weeks ago, ha. The other picture was coincidence. Tim Eddy was pointing to someone behind me saying “lets keep riding” when the event was over. It looks like he was pointing at me and I am a cool guy but I was just phoaching. After 5 years of shooting, writing and doing interviews I still know very few riders and that is by design. I like having the perspective of a fan, not an insider. I hate stories that are like “Bro, my bro’s and I were ripping, look how bitchen I am” always an outsider, like 99% of snowboarders

Some of us Snowboard, some of us Skate, some of us Surf, some do all three. All of these are connected. Even though this is primarily a Snow site we are going to throw in the occasional Skate and Surf pics just to change things up a bit. The season hasn’t even started so hell… here is this weeks Skate “Double Take” courtesy of George Crosland.

Photographer: George Crosland

Camera: Canon 1D Mark IIN

Rider: PLG

Location: Salt Lake City,UT. Dew Tour

Trick: Heelflip frontside air

These shots were taken practically right after each other. The action shot is during PLG’s final fun of the Salt Lake stop of the Dew Tour. Not only is this PLG’s final fun but the very last last run of the contest. PLG put himself into first place during this same run. He is doing a heelflip frontside air or something, like a set up trick for him. The other photo is right at the very moment when it is announced that the score for that run was enough to overtake Shaun White and Bucky Lasek for the win. I was in the airport showing Bucky some of the photos and he said “you gotta use that one of PLG, that is right when he yelled fuck yea” Well, here they are.

I just got back from an interesting weekend photo shoot in Salt Lake City. The goal was to shoot with Aaron Bitner, check out a few resorts and have some fun. There was not too much snow in Utah but the conditions were good none the less. It has been so cold that that the snow remained dry and good despite the fact that it had not snowed for several days. This story is about the trip as a whole as opposed to strictly being about snowboarding. After all a trip is about seeing new places AND shredding the hell out of the mountains. The pictures tell the story.
