- September 15, 08 - Hot Dawgs & Handrails - Bear Mtn, California.
” My first “snowboarding” shoot of the season.  The contest was alright they had built a jump and people were hucking.  Looking back on all the contests I shot this season I have been more stoked on the non action photos I get while I’m there. This being one of them. Here I that I was at a rave or something since all these socal kids were going crazy and crowd surfing to a techno DJ after the Rail Jam went down.  I didn’t really understand this because techno SUCKS!”

” I was pumped to go shoot this after seeing last year event in the Giant Stadium.  This year was quite the downgrade to say the least.  I also heard that the riders didn’t get paid and were charged for their arranged hotels and that’s wack.  It was rad to hang out in the city for a couple of days though”

“To be completely honest I really wasn’t that stoked on this rail mission.  It was just one of those nights that took forever, it was super cold and I was sick and just wasn’t feeling it. The riders did do some sick stuff and I managed to get two shots this being one of them.”

mac spedale salt lake city utah andrew miller photos
- December 10, 08 - Mac Spedale; SLC, Utah.

“Another rail mission early December when the snowpack wasn’t really deep enough to go anywhere. We went to this aqueduct for a rail to concrete bank feature. I had just gotten a few gels for my flashes and I figured this would be the perfect place to test them out since I have never used them before. I have heard and read a lot of photographers and random people saying how gels are so played out and whatever but I don’t give a shit.  I think that if you like it and it works with the photo its just another tool in photography to enhance your photo. “

- December 16, 08 - Brighton, Utah.

” Just another misty afternoon pow day at Brighton trying to find new zones with the crew. These are some of my favorite days on the mountain when the light is slowing popping through the fog and its still snowing.  This photos captures that feeling those days for me.”

mac spedale brighton utah andrew miller photos

“Blower!!  A lot of people hate on Utah but days like these are completely worth living here.  Mac Spedale will be the first person the tell you that exact same thing.”

- January 05, 09 - Mark Dangler; Brighton, Utah.

” The Dark Mangler my partner in crime for the season. We created and produced Brighton Bunch together and he also filmed for snowrev so we worked together a lot. Mark is a solid guy and amazing filmer.  I’m stoked to see what he gets going for this next season!  This was just one of those days we were trying to shoot but mother nature decided against it.”

kurt wastell brighton utah andrew miller photos
- January 07, 09 - Kurt Wastell; Brighton, Utah.

” This is just a typical pow day at Brighton lapping Mary’s. Days like these are hard to shoot because everyone wants to shred the new snow especially in zones that are easily accessible like this one.  I hooked up with Kurt and crew for a few runs to snag a few shots. He is one hell of a nice guy and amazing rider. “

- January 10, 09 - Nick Russell; Brighton, Utah.

” Looking at certain features with a skateboarding eye is key. When I find a good one, pole jams are some of my favorite things skate. Nick found this broken tree jam with a super bumpy fast tranny but he sucked it up like a pro. I can always count on Nick to find cool random features.”

Nick Russell Brighton Utah Andrew Miller photos
- January 13, 09 - Nick Russell; Brighton, Utah.

” Nick has got to be one of my favorite people to shoot with. Why? Because he is always down, never complains and I can always get a shot of him on anything. This kid has some original style that you don’t see to much of these days. You are going to see some good things coming from this foolio I guarantee it! Keep making those slow wide turns brotha!

- January 19, 09 - Tyler Emond; Park City, Utah.

” I had hung out with Tyler a few times but never really rode with him.  I always heard how sick he was but after destroying his ankle at the Open last year he had kind of slowed down taking a coaching position up at Park City.  This is proof Ty has not slowed down one bit.  He was going so big during this session he broke his Burton Vapor.  I was stoked to finally link up with him he a rad guy!”

” This was taken the same day as the photos above.  Joe has just stomped the ally oop seven and went for one last hit laying out a smooth method. I really like putting two photos together to tell a before and after story or just help the viewer get a feel of the mood before or after the action.”

- January 25, 09 - Johnny Centi; Brighton, Utah.

” If I remember correctly this was snowrev owner’s Johnny Centi first real pow of the season.  He had been shredding on the east for a little bit but this was his first trip out west and the start of the SNOWREV All Roads Lead to Tour.  Let just say he was STOKED!”

- January 26, 09- SNOWREV; Brighton, Utah.

“On the side of shooting photos I like to dabble with design when I get the chance. This year I had the opportunity to completely create and design the wrap for the SNOWREV RV.  This was one of the biggest projects I had ever worked on and It was a great feeling to finally see the RV roll into my drive way in person. I was really happy with the final product!

” We had dinner with Andrew Hardingham one night where he showed us his Las Vegas “Hard Party Commitment” contract.  Him and a couple of Canooks made these contract to party has as hard as they could in Vegas.  Here is a small bit from the contract: Guideline 4 ” all contracts will try their best to be reasonable and fair toward other contractors. this does not mean you can be sympathetic to someone who goes broke or can’t pay his way because he’s a douche bag. We will hold everyone to this contract to the full extent of the law of brotheren. Be Warned”

” After Sedona we drove all night so we could shred Taos the newly opened resort to snowboarders.   I just cruised around all day with my g10 and was able hike a few smaller chutes. Gotta leave my pack aka “the angry midget” behind and just ride sometimes!”

- Feburary 04, 09 -  Ober Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

” This place was a trip. Every person I told that I went snowboarding in Tennessee never fully believed me.  Here is the proof.  This place got 3 inches the night before and the locals were tripping.  School was canceled and they said it was some of the best conditions ever.  Ober Gatlinburg has an annual snow fall of around 30 inches.”

” West Coast to the East we finally made it NYC. This was some next level shit for New York having a huge 90 ft tall drop in for a  30 ft tall snowboard jump right next to the Williamsburg Bridge.. Speed was an issue but Pizzle took it home for Jersey and won himself 50K.”

” I love going to the East but its hard to go there when winter is in full swing over on the other side of the nation.  There is a reason why I live on the west. I was glad to be back home catching the tail end of a huge storm the night I arrived.  Woke up to bluebird and three feet of blower.  Me and Nick Russell decided to take a stroll up to Grizzly Gulch and get some!.”

- March 11, 09 - Joe Carter; Brighton, Utah.

” Revolution correspondent the Crypt Keeper was another one of my partners in crime for the season. Everyone who works for SNOWREV rides and rides a lot.  Joe is a perfect example of that.  This guys hikes and shreds harder, faster and longer than most people I know. That goes for the at the bar too. I had some great days with Carter and always stoked when he helps out!.”

wci 2009 mammoth andrew miller photos
- May 5, 09 -Mammoth WCI Rail Jam - Mammoth, California.

” I have been attending and shooting most of the major US contests for the past four years and this was my 5th time shooting the WCI.  This year I tried to stay away from the contest scene a little more but this was one of the few I attended. This shot kind of shows were my head was at that night…. in over-it-ville.  Same thing different year it but this year it was raining and I was fighting for my flash channel and the media chaos not to mention my head was still in Alaska.  I really cared less about capturing the circus tricks going down on a 12 ft rail and tried to do a little behind the scenes type shot.  I was pretty pleased on how this one came out.”

- May 7, 09 - Superpark 13 - Mammoth, California.

This is not a particular favorite photo of mine but the reason I’m putting it in here is for Cody Rosenthal. The day after this was taken Cody had a bad accident on this exact jump causing him to break his back and be flown straight to the ICU in Reno. Cody doesn’t have health insurance and this bill is going to be huge. If you know Cody even if you don’t but you want to support snowboarding and an amazing snowboarder donate to his fund HERE. Cody I wish you best recovery you will be back on your board boning those methods ever hard before you know it!

” Chili is the man.  He hit this monster first and then sent a back rodeo 2nd or 3rd try.  Can’t you image riding up to this jump and just hucking yourself backwards and upside down this high in the air? Insane. Lots of respect for this guy!”

- May 8, 09 - Lonnie Kauk - Superpark 13 - Mammoth, California.

“After living in Mammoth for a few years I always enjoy heading back and visiting especially to ride and climb with Lonnie.  By now everyone should know about Big L and this photos doesn’t really need much explaining.  Lonnie in his element destroying yet another Superpark.”

” I was posted up in the tree’s away from the other million photographers waiting for somebody to really bone out a grab.  People were going pretty big but I hadn’t gotten the shot I really liked yet.  Colin was the first rider to bust a method during the session and even thought it wasn’t the biggest air of the day it was a damn fine method.  You can never beat a solid method on a hip. It was always be sick.

“My last on snow shot of the season headed to the parking lot from a long day at Superpark. Time to kick into summer mode….until the next time.. peace!”

ANDREWMILLERPHOTOS.COM

Going to Alaska drastically changed my perspective of snowboarding and mountains.  The shire scale of these beasts in the Chugach are completely indescribable and can only be fully appreciated when your standing in front or on top of them.  I had never felt such an urge to capture mountains like I did when I was in Valdez.  I think I shot somewhere around a thousand photos of just mountains, spines, couloir, glaciers and any other interesting rock formations in our time there and I still could of shot a thousand more.  This place gave me so much more of a respect and appreciation of the people who risk their lives to ride these giants and how fast these monsters can take your life.  That really came in full effect during our stay when unfortunatly a few lives where lost to these mountains.  I hope the best for their families and that their souls rest in peace knowing that they were all doing what they loved in an amazing place.

I will end this rant with an interesting quote I read the other day.

“I just want to say that to anyone who rides professionally or aspires to any kind of snowboarding greatness: If your goal is not Valdez Alaska, then you are not a snowboarder…in my opinion.” - Kevin Jones via Espn Interview by Nate Deschenes

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 - Full
Before you read any further, I must state that even with this glitch I am experiencing, Lightroom is still the best photo editing and digital asset application I have ever found.  Get yours here.

Lightroom Catalog Corruption

As I was loading 1700 photos from the World Quarterpipe Championships, The Back To The Boneyard event at Waterville Valley and the Loon Mountain Last Call Contest my computer shut down due to lack of battery during the upload process.

Since this incident I have been unable to load my light room catalog that I have been loading all of my photos to for the past 2 years. Suddenly the application gives me this message stating that Lightroom is corrupt and cannot be loaded.

I receive the following messages :

Adobe Lightroom Glitch

and this is the scary one because I can not locate any recent backups of this catalog.  I would always skip the message that popped up saying “backup your files now, or wait”
It is highly recommended that you back up your photos regularly and I back that 100%.  Do it and save yourself the drama down the road.

Adobe Lightroom Corrput

Hopefully I can get all of my photos back with all of my settings and adjustments.  I will keep you posted on what happens.  None the less Adobe lightroom is still the best digital asset management software available.

SECOND LOOK | World Quarterpipe Championships 2008

This weeks SECOND LOOK we reminisce of the 2008 World Quarterpipe Championships held at the Timber Ridge, Vermont. Click the photos below to be sent straight back to last years drunken debauchery for one of the best snowboard contests ever.

World Quarters 2008. Shit. I feel like I should have a drink in my hand just typing this. Good thing I just made another. After 4 years of hibernation, sort of like the Olympics but way better, the World Quarterpipe Championships has come back in a new spot with a new crowd but the same attitude. Let’s have a contest, get really drunk, and all have the best time possible.  There might not have been a Rolex given out for any thirty-foot airs but the amount of free beer and whiskey made up for that. There sure as hell wasn’t a crowd of tens of thousands of people, but there was plenty of snowball throwing, beer can tossing, beer spraying, and of course a big ass fire pit you had to jump over before the quarterpipe.- Joe Carter

RANDOMS | Utah Urban Attack Part - One

RANDOMS - Randoms photos with some randoms thoughts or stories from the shoot.

- Will Tuddenham drops hefty Ogden roof. This was one of those spots right off the main street down town where almost every one who walks by wonders what and why the hell was somebody jumping off a building. You can run into the strangest people when riding in a heavy populated area.  Will fought the crowds and stomped this knee buster.

- Cody Comrie transfer to wallride in Ogden.  You might recognize this same spot from a TWS cover with JP Walker doing a mctwist transfer.  Never had shot or meet any of the Team Thunder crew.  I rolled up barley meet everybody and started shooting right away. One try later Cody laid down this interesting feature.

- Ben Farrell pressing one out at some random elementary school in Sugar House.  I don’t exactly recall where this place was since we roll up real late in the night but it was a super low bust spot sitting behind this Indian school.  I had a hard time finding a good angle due to the monster lip on the other side of the wall and this annoying tree blocking everything on my right.  Ben looks like he has only one arm but held on to this solid 5-0.

- Here is an ass shot of Mac Spedale nose wheelin through the same rail as above.  This was one of those nights that was super cold, went really late and I was having alittle trouble finding a different angle that I really liked.  I think right when I started shooting here it was the last time anybody felt like hitting the rail.  I’m alway stoked when somebody will hit something one more time or do a different trick just for photo but this wasn’t one of those nights.

Stay tuned for Utah Urban Attack Part - Two
